2 Hi. Can we please get Bascom to reopen the patio after 5PM and on weekends? This is where students go to microwave their food and eat, but when it is locked students can no longer use the microwaves or eat there. Could we either get this changed such that those with badges can enter the area, or can we get microwaves available for students at Calder? One of these seems reasonable

Thank you for your comment.  Although we have no control over Bascom Palmer space, I have contacted Medical School Administration and they reached out to Bascom Palmer to see if they can reopen the patio to card access for nights and weekends.

Another option is that the student lounge in Rosensteil is accessable nights and weekends and does still have a microwave that can be used.

3 Hi. Could we please get environmental services to do a deep cleaning of the building (and specifically the 3rd floor history of medicine room), followed by a cleaning by a insect terminator? There are an abundance of ants in the HoM room and it is quite gross. Ants continuously crawl over the tables and it needs to be fixed. Thanks

Thank you for letting us know.  Although our Library Services members do rounds each day to check the surroundings, often our patrons are aware of situations they may miss.  We have submitted a ticket with Environmental Services for a deep cleaning and exterminator.

7 Studying in Calder is such a pleasant experience! Always well kept. Rene and David are phenomenal staff members. I once had an issue with a computer monitor on the second floor that was blurry. I tried everything to fix it, but nothing seemed to work. I brought up the issue to Rene and David's attention, and within the hour the monitor was switched for a new one!!! Such a warm and helpful environment that i greatly appreciate!!

8 When I request copies from previous books, the copies are blurry and blurry black and white. I good quality printer for the library or copy service to use would be great since I do archive work also

Comment on Fri Dec 23, 2016, 9:36 am

Library staff makes every effort to ensure copies are legible. Material is first scanned and then emailed or printed. Unfortunately, some documents do not scan well for a variety of reasons (age of paper, color of paper, font type, etc.). Also, in some instances when we request materials from other libraries the scanned copies are blurry in such instances we work with originating libraries to ensure we are receiving the best possible copy available. When materials requested from other libraries are of poor quality, Calder works with that library to enhance the quality, if the document type permits.

9 High quality research consultations would be really neat. Someone at the library students could go to discuss non-basic science research project ideas/project design. Even better - a statistician would be amazing.

Comment on Fri Dec 23, 2016, 9:31 am

Our Research Liaison Librarian, Zsuzsanna Nemeth, will be happy to meet with you to discuss your research project and develop an effective search strategy in appropriate databases.  Although the Library does not have a statistician, we can direct you to other departments on campus that might be able to assist you.  You may contact Mrs. Nemeth at 305-243-9505 or at znemeth@med.miami.edu.

10 Please offer more training courses

Comment on Fri Dec 23, 2016, 9:29 am

Thank you for your suggestion.  Until recently, Librarians regularly scheduled all classes Calder offers at least once per month.  More often than not, individuals registered, a classroom was reserved, but no one came to the class.  To make the best use of Librarian’s time, and to offer more varied training times, Librarians now offer all classes on demand at Training at Calder Library.  Classes are offered for either individuals or groups.  A detailed description of all classes currently offered can be found on the class registration page and classes include:
General Information
     Information-Seeking Tips @ Calder Library
Database Training
                EMBASE
                PubMed 1 – the Basics
                PubMed 2- Advanced
                Scopus
Citation Management Programs
                EndNote
                Mendeley
                RefWorks
In addition to the above listed classes, Librarians are also available for one-on-one professional consultations, literature searches, systematic review and meta-analysis assistance.  Special training classes may also be requested but appropriate time must be allowed for preparation.

11 I think the bathrooms should also be cleaned an additional time during the middle of the day. Although they are cleaned at night, by the mid-afternoon the bathrooms are destroyed.

Comment on Thu Dec 22, 2016, 10:26 am

You are absolutely correct.  Calder Library attendance is at an all-time high and those increased numbers put a burden on our restroom facilities.  Due to this and to suggestions just like yours, Calder worked with GCA Service Group (UM’s current cleaning contractor) to schedule daily mid-day cleanings, which began in September 2016.

12 The only aspect I can think of is having a resource like BioMed Communications on the Coral Gables campus

There is a Digital Media Lab at Richter that provides poster printing, digitization and equipment rentals. http://library.miami.edu/medialab/printing/

Thank you very much for taking the time to write.  In June 2016, the Medical Campus Academic Technologies unit of UMIT relocated to room 1018A in the Calder Library.  The Student Technology Help Desk’s normal operating hours are Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.  The Technician is available to assist students who use both MACs and PCs with:
Connecting various devices (laptops, tablets, phones)
                Downloading and installing University-licensed software
Scanning devices for viruses and attempting to remediate issues
Accessing University-licensed cloud file storage services

15 Please have someone to assist with searches available via email.

Comment on Thu Dec 8, 2016, 10:50 am

There is an online form that patrons can use to request a Bibliographic Search (free of charge for all UM/JMH employees).  The form is on the Calder Library website at:  http://calder.med.miami.edu/forms/bib-search.html .  Non-UM users can also request a literature search at a low cost.  Contact a Reference Librarian by phone at 305-243-6648 or by email at reference@med.miami.edu

Calder Librarians work hard to "get the word out" about the Library's valuable resources.  Thanks for your postive feedback!
