1 boardvitals and NEJM 360 are not actually accessible to residents at this point. Boardvitals was previously but now does not appear to be working, not sure if the subscription was cancelled? I know that we also do not have an active NEJM 360 account (for pediatrics at least) yet the link is on the calder website. Can you clarify these two things?

Comment on Sat Nov 17, 2018, 3:45 pm

Anyone may access NEJM Resident 360.  However, to access Rotation Prep content, you have to complete a NEJM Resident 360 profile at https://resident360.nejm.org/pages/home which must be associated with an individual or institutional subscription to the New England Journal of Medicine.  Since Calder Library has an institutional subscription to NEJM, UM and JHS students, faculty, and staff can gain full access to NEJM Resident 360 content by following these instructions:

You must log in once to NEJM Resident 360 from the campus of your institution, or through a VPN, and NEJM will recognize the IP address. After that initial log in, NEJM will remember the association, and you may sign on from anywhere, on any device.  You may receive a “Confirm your email” email notification to which you must respond.

I followed these instructions and was able to access the Pediatrics Rotation Prep content.  If you continue having difficulties with access, please contact Library Services at 305-243-6424 or libraryservices@miami.edu

Regarding Board Vitals, although Medical Education did not renew the institutional Board Vitals license, the licensing company, Stat!Ref, is working with individual departments in an effort to license Board Vitals on a departmental/specialty level, or to offer access to individuals in the departments at a discounted rate.  Please check with your specialty department to determine if this might be a possibility for you.

3 Dear Calder Library, Hello, my name is Darius Chyou and I am the Class President for the first year medical student class. There has been significant interest in my class about the potential to purchase treadmill desks at Calder. Other medical school libraries, such as at UNC and UCF, do have treadmill desks and have gotten positive results. I know there are pros and cons to the desks, which I would be more than happy to discuss with you in person! I was just wondering if this could be a possibility, and if so, if we could meet in person to discuss it. Thank you very much! Sincerely, Darius Chyou

Comment on Wed Dec 13, 2017, 9:32 pm

Hi Darius,
Thanks for posting your comment requesting treadmill desks at Calder.  I was at a meeting at the UCF medical library a few weeks ago and saw the treadmill desks there.  I learned from the UCF medical library director that the treadmill desks were purchased for the library by the UCF Facilities Department and were not paid for from the Library’s budget.  I will explore pricing for treadmill desks, but the Library must be sure that the limited funds for the renovation and replacement furniture serve to provide a comfortable study environment for the maximum number of students, who have been using the Calder Library in record numbers during the past few years.

4 you got rid of Quoza. it was a very useful program. why

Comment on Tue Oct 24, 2017, 4:49 pm

Hi Dr. Vance,

Regrettably, Calder Library has been unable to retain the QUOSA database subscription because of increasing cost and a low number of users.  With no increase to the Library’s resource budget last year (inflationary increases for Calder’s e-resources is approximately $100,000 annually) and an 8% decrease in the Library’s overall FY2018 budget, other cancellations should be expected.

We understand that QUOSA is a unique product so Elsevier was contacted about personal subscriptions. Elsevier responded that it no longer supports individual QUOSA accounts.  Although I know that Mendeley is not the same as QUOSA, Richter Library has  a full subscription for all UM students, faculty, and employees to Mendeley. (See Elsevier’s instructions for migrating from QUOSA to Mendeley below.)

Please let us know if you have additional questions.  We understand that the loss of any resource is disappointing and more than an inconvenience.

Elsevier instructions for migrating from QUOSA to Mendeley:
For individual reference and literature management tasks, we are encouraging individual QUOSA subscribers to migrate to Mendeley ( https://www.mendeley.com/features/). To migrate references from QUOSA to Mendeley, you can export as an EndNote (.ris) file and then follow these instructions to import them to Mendeley.

In QIM

1. Go to Settings > Citation Manager > Select Citation Manager > EndNote
(you should see a checkmark appear before Endnote) You can repeat the steps above to verify

2. Go to Settings > Citation Manager > Select Save Citations to a File
(you should see a checkmark appear before Save Citations to a file) You can repeat the steps above to verify

Then, you can select records in the results pane, click File > Export > To EndNote, RefMan, etc
Give is a file name and select a location

For future reference
I found this information of how to get batches of citations from PubMed into Mendeley

5 Do you have access to the Current Protocols in Immunology? We currently get hard copies but instead wanted to know if Faculty and staff would be able to go online.

Comment on Fri Oct 6, 2017, 2:22 pm

Hi Silvia,

Calder Library has not had the funds to transition to online subscriptions to Wiley’s Protocols titles.  We hope to do that in the future.  As with the rest of the medical campus, the Library has undergone an 8% budget cut for the current fiscal year so it will be awhile before this can happen.  For quick electronic versions of the articles, you may request free individual articles through Calder’s Interlibrary Loan Office and receive emailed PDFs of the article, usually within a few yours.  The ILL form link is below:

Hello and thank you for your message!  All UM faculty, staff, and students should have access to UpToDate regardless of campus.  If you are on campus, you shouldn't need to log-in.  However, in order to accss UpToDate off campus or on a mobile device, you will need to create an acccount (regsiter) while on campus and sign on before using.  The registration page can be found at this link UpToDate Registion.  Please don't hesitatate to contact me if you need further assistance.

7 Please either install the UWorld Launch client or allow the Macs in the Papper Study Lounge on the 3rd Floor (3017A) and in the Mac Lab (2011) on the 2nd floor to run the UWorld Launch client. Right now, you cannot run the client on Macs because the current security settings on these computers do not recognize the publisher of this launch client. This is one of the main study resources used by Medical students and it would be appreciated if it could be run on all the computers in the library, not just on the PC's.

Comment on Wed Jul 5, 2017, 2:29 pm

Good morning,

Thank you for your message and for letting the Library know that this resource is needed.  Our Electronic Services Librarian is now working with the Academic Services Department to have UWorld installed on the MACs.  Academic Serives manages all of the updates and resources on Library patron computers.  They will first need to create a new desktop image before activating the resources.  Hopefully this new image will be deployed within the next two weeks.

Sincerely yours,

Kim

8 Hi, I noticed that the link for Case Files for Pediatrics did not provide access to the text. It directs you to "Access Medicine" but then says "your institution does not subscribe". May a subscription please be purchased to provide access? Thank you.

Comment on Tue Jul 4, 2017, 3:00 pm

Hello,

Thank you for your message and for brining this to our attention.  We do have a subscription to Case Files Pediatrics.  However, Access Medicine's site was having issues on July 4th and 5th.  Our Access Medicine representatives were able to restore access yesterday (July 5th) at around 5pm.  I checked this morning and the Case Files were working.  Please let me know if you have any further issues.

11 More outlets/ways to plug in a laptop charging cable in the 3rd floor study room!!! Please!!! Especially from the tables that located far from wall outlets, the cable splitters don't reach them.

Comment on Wed Jan 18, 2017, 9:36 am

Thank you for your suggestion.  The Library working with Facilities hired an outside company to install 7 new 4 plug floor flushed outlets.  Three outlets were installed in the 3rd floor History of Medicine Room, 1 in the 3rd floor open study space, and 3 more on the first floor in the open study space.  We are excited to report that these new outlets increase our plug capacity by 28.

Calder Library recently implemented a new access method which allows patrons to use their CaneID. There is no longer a need for a separate library account to access Calder’s e-resources remotely.

13 BIOMEDICAL COMMUNICATION: I believe that additional personnel could be hired to help out in speeding up the production of audiovisual materials. I also believe that this equipment might be upgraded and newer, smarter technology added.

Comment on Wed Jan 18, 2017, 9:03 am

Since Biomedical Communications operates on a cost-recovery basis (income supports all departmental cost including personnel salaries) hiring additional personnel is highly problematic.  However, most of Biomed Communications’ equipment is professional grade and has been updated in the last year.

The UPrint system is a University-wide, well tested, and supported state of the art printing system that works very well for the majority of users.  Library staff is always on standby to assist any patron who is having difficulties printing.

16 When I request copies from previous books, the copies are blurry and blurry black and white. I good quality printer for the library or copy service to use would be great since I do archive work also

Comment on Fri Dec 23, 2016, 9:36 am

Library staff makes every effort to ensure copies are legible. Material is first scanned and then emailed or printed. Unfortunately, some documents do not scan well for a variety of reasons (age of paper, color of paper, font type, etc.). Also, in some instances when we request materials from other libraries the scanned copies are blurry in such instances we work with originating libraries to ensure we are receiving the best possible copy available. When materials requested from other libraries are of poor quality, Calder works with that library to enhance the quality, if the document type permits.

Comment on Thu Dec 22, 2016, 10:29 am

Research databases are listed on Calder Library’s website at http://calder.med.miami.edu under the “Databases” tab.  The most popular databases are listed on the drop-down menu and “All Databases” are listed on the top of the list.  It will be helpful to create a free individual account on each of the databases so you can access resources remotely.  You need to create the accounts when on campus or linked to the UM server using your CaneID and password.  Contact a Reference Librarian at 305-243-6648 for additional information and assistance.

21 It would be great to have an institution portal link from the Calder website that takes the student/professor to Pubmed. Then upon successful Pubmed search for an article, a single click "UM access" button to download the PDF of the article (assuming UM access for that Journal). Currently the Pubmed search is inside the UM website, does not seem as robust. I offer this idea coming from Yale where they have a Yale Links portal through the Pubmed website.

Comment on Thu Dec 22, 2016, 10:20 am

Thank you for your suggestion.  As it happens, in addition to Calder’s PubMed search box, the Website does have an institutional portal link.  UM’s institutional PubMed link can be accessed from the Calder Website Homepage’s left side menu bar under the Databases drop-down menu. Once you select a retrieved item to which UM subscribes, the PubMed result displays a full text link.

25 I wish the library would add more electronic journals.

Comment on Wed Dec 21, 2016, 1:12 pm

Thank you very much for your comment.  The Library currently provides full-text access to more than 8,000 electronic journals.  In a perfect world, the Library could offer its patrons every title available. Because of the high cost of Science, Technology and Medicine (STM) journals, this is not feasible.  If there is a particular title you would like Library Administration to evaluate for purchase, please submit a Purchase/Subscription Request Form and it will be reviewed for consideration.  (In 2016 Medical students requested a subscription to the journal, BMJ Case Reports.  Library Admin was able to plan for the cost of that subscription in its next fiscal year budget.  Full-text access to this title begins in January 2017.)

Also, Calder delivers free Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Documents to all UM faculty, staff, and students.  If you find an article that you would like but cannot access from UM, please fill out an ILL form and our ILL team will request the article from a library that has a subscription to the journal.  Most often, requests for ILL articles arrive as a PDF attachment in your UM email within 24 hours; many arrive sooner than that.
