1 Hi. Can we please get Bascom to reopen the patio after 5PM and on weekends? This is where students go to microwave their food and eat, but when it is locked students can no longer use the microwaves or eat there. Could we either get this changed such that those with badges can enter the area, or can we get microwaves available for students at Calder? One of these seems reasonable

Thank you for your comment.  Although we have no control over Bascom Palmer space, I have contacted Medical School Administration and they reached out to Bascom Palmer to see if they can reopen the patio to card access for nights and weekends.

Another option is that the student lounge in Rosensteil is accessable nights and weekends and does still have a microwave that can be used.

2 Hi. Could we please get environmental services to do a deep cleaning of the building (and specifically the 3rd floor history of medicine room), followed by a cleaning by a insect terminator? There are an abundance of ants in the HoM room and it is quite gross. Ants continuously crawl over the tables and it needs to be fixed. Thanks

Thank you for letting us know.  Although our Library Services members do rounds each day to check the surroundings, often our patrons are aware of situations they may miss.  We have submitted a ticket with Environmental Services for a deep cleaning and exterminator.

3 When will the second floor renovation be done?

Comment on Sun Dec 3, 2017, 12:49 pm

Hello,

Thank you for your question.  The 1st phase (flooring) of the remodel project is partly done.   Unfortunately the schedule was pushed back a few weeks because of hurricane Irma.  Deselection of books and removal of shelving is complete.  The bid/quote process for flooring installation was completed on November 30th.   A P/O for flooring was submitted on December 1st.  Once the carpet tile is removed, the floor will need to be sanded to remove old glue and then the floor will be leveled.  Because the 2nd floor is open to the 1st floor, Administration is currently working with Facilities to obtain quotes for dust containment and we hope to have all quotes and to complete the flooring phase by the end of December 2017.

The 2nd phase (classroom buildout) has several more stages.  The tentative project schedule for phase 2 is:
Documents/Engineering          start   12/04/2018
Bidding                                    start    1/15/2018
Permits                                    start    2/05/2018
Construction                            start    3/19/2018
Completion                              end     6/18/2018

We realize construction can be difficult and disruptive.  Thank you for your patience while we make these much-needed improvements to your library.

4 More outlets/ways to plug in a laptop charging cable in the 3rd floor study room!!! Please!!! Especially from the tables that located far from wall outlets, the cable splitters don't reach them.

Thank you for your suggestion.  The Library working with Facilities hired an outside company to install 7 new 4 plug floor flushed outlets.  Three outlets were installed in the 3rd floor History of Medicine Room, 1 in the 3rd floor open study space, and 3 more on the first floor in the open study space.  We are excited to report that these new outlets increase our plug capacity by 28.

5 I think the bathrooms should also be cleaned an additional time during the middle of the day. Although they are cleaned at night, by the mid-afternoon the bathrooms are destroyed.

You are absolutely correct.  Calder Library attendance is at an all-time high and those increased numbers put a burden on our restroom facilities.  Due to this and to suggestions just like yours, Calder worked with GCA Service Group (UM’s current cleaning contractor) to schedule daily mid-day cleanings, which began in September 2016.

6 Please turn the air conditioning down. The library is freezing.

Thank you for your comment.  It is very challenging to maintain an even temperature throughout the building given the wide variation in ceiling heights, different types of user space, and the necessity to regulate temperatures for several computer classrooms and Calder’s stack collections.  In order to maintain an optimal environment for the computers and reduce instances of mold, these two areas require us to maintain a building temperature that could be too cold in some areas.

If you could let us know specifically where it is freezing, we will work with Facilities to see if we can resolve the issue and at least increase the temperature to a relatively comfortable level.
